Web Hosting - a little guidance

Purchasing a web hosting plan can be frustrating and often time consuming. With thousands of hosts available to choose from, most of them offering the same features it's little wonder things go wrong. When choosing a hosting plan, you need to figure out which fits your needs the best.

Here are the different types with a brief explanation.

Free web hosting

Free web hosting often comes with strings attached, usually you'll have banners on top of all of your web pages. The features may not be so great, limits may be put in place to prevent huge loads (even when they say unlimited) and most people will be able to tell you went with the free option. OK if you're just wanting to get a site up and running for a small project or blogg but in most cases you're better off looking elsewhere.

This type of host is not the preferred type for online business web sites.

The most common and frequently used web hosting solution is shared hosting, all our main plans are of this type. Most people and businesses just don't need anything more. Shared hosting uses servers that are supporting many web sites, you will not see nor be associated with these however. Shared hosting can come with all the options a dedicated server does, apart from the few things usually used by the more dedicated user. There's a reason why this is the most popular web hosting plan out there. It's cost effective and does the job!

Dedicated hosting, normally managed but available unmanaged with some providers. (Rented)Here you get the whole server to yourself. Unless you are savvy with the operating systems of servers then you'll need a managed one. Most people and businesses can get along fine with shared hosting. If your company does a large amount of marketing on TV then a dedicated may be needed, the reason for this is that when an advert shows a web address, the server will get flooded with requests. Not good on a shared plan; for you or your fellow plan owners.

Here you can purchase the server rather and rent the rack space. This is for running high volume and multiple large web sites. It's doubtful many businesses need anything like this so be careful of those trying to sell it you.

Basic Features of Servers

On the whole you'll usually get Windows 2000, Unix and Linux servers. You will not need to worry about the server the web host provides because most simple web sites run off one of these three types. (If you have a specific program/script in mind you'll need to make sure on what systems it will run)

In basic terms this is how much room you get. I can sell you unlimited without much worry, simply because providers know that the majority of users will never use it. We would rather keep things more honest and simpler.

Bandwidth relates to how many site visitors you will have on your site in any one period. This is an area where it can get tricky. It's difficult to know how successful your site will be, so it's harder to make a recommendation. However, plans can be easily tailored with ongoing adjustments to cope with most situations.

Simple, 1 email = someone@yournewsite.com. Available in various forms, the most popular being POP3 and IMAP. Other services are available depending on server software used but we won't go into them here, those that require them usually know about them. Everyone else should be happy with POP3 - to be used with software on your PC or web mail used via your web browser.
